Microcapsule embedded self-healing membranes for water purification |

Herein, we demostrate an instance of a self-healing water treatment membrane that employs microcapsules as healing media. This membrane is fabricated to embed polyurethane microcapsules within its structure. When membrane structure is physically damaged, the microcapsules release a reactive isocyanate healing agent that rapidly reacts with surrounding water and forms an expanded polyurea matrix that heals the damage. The self-healing was found to recover water flux. Various approaches explored in this study to achieve the microcapsule-based membrane healing, distinct from structural material healing. |
