EGF stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of epithelial tissues such as the intestinal mucosa, corneal epithelial tissue, lung and trachea epithelia. Moreover, EGF was able to inhibit gastric acid secretion and protect gastroduodenal mucosa against tissue injury induced by ulcerogenic agents. A drug delivery system for biologically active agents targeted to specific cells could be used to improve tissue repair. It is necessary to develop a carrier system which facilitates the controlled release of EGF over an extended time period. In this study, gelatin (type A and type B) was chosen as controlled release material. Gelatin is biodegradable in gastrointestinal system by various enzymes such pepsin, trypsin, and a chymotrypsin. The behavior of gelatin biodegradation depends on the interaction between oppositely charged gelatin and enzymes. The positively charged gelatin, type A, in the medium containing pepsin was more biodegradable than the negatively charged gelatin, type B. The effects of water- soluble carbodiimide and gelatin concentrations on the swelling and biodegradation kinetics of the charge gelatins in environment medium containing enzymes were investigated. The results will be shown in detail in coming meeting. |
