Aramid Fibers show excellent mechanical properties. There are many factors such as crystallinity, crystal orientation, and rigidity which influence these properties. Until now, most of researchers have focused on the mechanical properties in macro perspective. However, this paper pays attention to the skin/core microstructure among these factors because the development of instrument is able to detect the surface and/or crystal structure from micro to nano range. It is expected that these excellent mechanical properties will be correlated to the skin/core structure. This paper has examined the relationship between hardness and the skin/core structure using FMM and F/D spectroscopy. Several aramid fibers were embedded in epoxy resins and two types of samples were prepared. One was microtomed perpendicular to the fiber axis, and the other was polished. The hardness was changed depending on the skin/core region and the value in the skin region was revealed harder than core region |
