Carbonization of Pyropolymers and Pyroproteins at High Temperature |

When polymers are heated in an inert atmosphere to temperature above 300 °C they lose much of their non-carbon content as gases and change to forms of carbon. This process is termed carbonization. The process by which the non-carbon content is thereafter eliminated is not complete until heat-treatment temperatures exceed 1000 °C. Below this temperature, the materials have intermediate properties between polymer and carbon and are termed pyropolymers. Here, we examined changes in the structural and chemical configurations of β-sheet structured proteins (pyroproteins) above the thermal degradation temperature (T>300 °C). We found that the β-sheet structure of the proteins was not destroyed, even during the rapid weight loss induced by thermal degradation. Subsequently, the β-sheet structure transformed to an sp2 carbon hexagonal structure by heating to 2800 °C. |
