Dynamic vulcanized thermoplastic/rubber blends has been known to be a useful method to prepare a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). In this study, a novel TPE based on dynamically vulcanized blends of thermoplastic polyurethane/silicone rubber (TPU/VMQ 80:20) were prepared by melt blending with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquixoane (POSS) nanoparticles in an internal mixer using peroxide as a curing agent. The morphology, thermal, mechanical and surface properties of the blend nanocomposites were investigated by SEM, AFM, water contact angle measurement, TGA, and tensile test. It was observed that POSS can participate in the vulcanization of VMQ and the blend with POSS showed higher surface hydrophobicity and improved thermal stability than the blend without the nanoparticles. The effects of location and dispersion of the POSS nanoparticles in the matrix blend on their properties are discussed. |
