Magnetorheology of Polymeric Microbead added Carbonyl iron Suspension |

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid consisting of soft magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particle in a nonmagnetic carrier fluid, has attracted an attention due to its high saturation and suitable particle size. But this system possesses some disadvantages including sedimentation problem. We tried to improve dispersion stability of the CI-based MR fluid with magnetite-coated monodisperse polystyrene (PS) spheres. This MR fluid with bimodal particles was suspended in mineral oil and its MR characteristics were examined via a rotational rheometer in a parallel plate geometry equipped with a magnetic field supplier. MR properties of the bimodal MR fluid with magnetic additive exhibit similar magnetic and MR properties compared to MR fluid consisting of pristine CI at different magnetic field strength, but with improved settling stability. |
