The separation of microalgal cell using microdroplets |

We investigated growth kinetics of microalgae, Neochloris oleoabundans in microdroplets consist of TAP-medium. Using microfluidic flow-focusing device with high aspect-ratio microchannel, we can evenly distribute microalgal cells and encapsulate single-microalgal cell into microdroplets. In order to examine the growth of single-microalgal cell, individual microdroplets were kept for five days. There will be differences of cell growth among microalgal mutants, if we use different single microalgal mutants. To screen microalgal mutants with high-growth rate, we have to separate the microdroplets that are encapsulating mutants by the difference of density using the perpendicular flow. High-density microdroplets will move straight to outlet chamber due to the intertial force. |
