An accumulation of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) has brought a substantial interest because of its energy and environmental issue. Pyroprocessing has been developed as a non-proliferation method which reduces volume and radioactivity of SNF. In head-end process of pyroprocessing, the fuel pellets are treated at high temperature to prepare a suitable form for an electrolytic reducing process, and various radioactive fission products (FPs) such as Cs-137, I-129, C-14, Kr-85 are released. In order to prevent radioactive contamination of the environment, we have designed a trapping system for the released FPs. The non-radioactive isotopes were used to evaluate the trapping system, and the chemical properties of the trapping materials were investigated.
