Hydrophobization of Silk Fibroin Nanofiber Surfaces by Fluorocarbon Plasma Treatment to Regulate Cell Adhesion and Proliferation Behavior |

Silk fibroin(SF) is widely used for tissue engineering scaffold because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity. In this study, SF nanofibrous mats were fabricated by simple electrospinning method. Conformational change of SF was induced by water vapor treatment from random coil to ß-sheet structures determined by ATR-FTIR, 13C CP/MAS NMR. After CF4 gas plasma treatment, the surface property of SF nanofibrous mats was dramatically changed to hydrophobic determined by XPS and water contact angle measurement. We have investigated fibroblasts’ behavior on each CF4 gas plasma treated and untreated SF nanofibrous mats. Fibroblasts' viability on electrospun nanofibrous mats was determined by MTT assay. SF nanofibrous mats with extremely hydrophobic surface can be used as biomedical materials, especially for guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes. |
