Morphology of Star-shaped Block Copolymer Comprised of Different Morphology of Linear Block Copolymer |

Star-shaped polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer (PS-b-PMMA) was synthesized by using α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) as a core of the star-shape. Hydroxyl groups in the α-CD were substituted with bromine by esterification and it was used for atom transfer radical polymerization. We found that the number of bromine substituted arms per one α-CD was higher than 16 measured by nuclear magnetic resonance and Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization. We controlled the molecular weight and block compositions of block copolymer. We could observe that range of nanostructures of Star-shaped block copolymers was different from that of linear block copolymer. Also, we cut Star-shaped block copolymers by hydrolysis of ester group linking cyclodextrin and linear block copolymer. We could observe that morphology of cut linear block copolymer was different from Star-shaped block copolymer. |
