제목 Time Evolution of Rubber-Phase Particle Size Distribution in HIPS Using Laser Light Scattering
초록 High impact polystyrene (HIPS) has been a typical thermoplastic to improve the impact strength and toughness of glassy polystyrene. It has been demonstrated that one of main factors affecting those properties is the particle size distribution of rubber phase. Due to the importance of rubber-phase particle size distribution on properties, many researchers have tried to characterize the morphology and to measure the rubber particle size distribution of HIPS using various characterization techniques. For two decades now, the laser light scattering technique has been widely used to analyze the particle size distribution in dispersion systems, while the technique produces the size swollen by solvent employed. In this study, the laser light scattering is utilized to measure the evolution of the rubber particle size distribution of HIPS polymerization depending on reaction time. The progression of phase inversion during polymerization is to be monitored, which in turn to be used to determine the proper prepolymerization time. After measuring the changes in rubber particle size at reaction intermediates during main reaction stage, the time evolution of particle shrinkage at main reaction stage is to be modeled.
