The chemical treatment on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces has been carried out in order to improve the thermal stabilities of CNT/epoxy composite system. The surface properties of CNTs were investigated in X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). And thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of CNT/epoxy composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. The results showed that the thermal stabilities of CNT/epoxy composites had the highest values at acidically treated CNT/epoxy composites, compared with neat CNT/epoxy or basically treated CNT/epoxy composites. This was due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strengths, resulting from the acid-base interfacial interaction between the polymeric matrix and the CNT fillers.
