Radiation curing of the polyolefine resins by e-beam has been of great interest for flame retarding application. It gives much shorter curing time, lower shrinkage, lower tooling cost, improved performance and elimination of hazardous cross-linking agents etc. Polypropylene and its blend with recycled polyethylene were melt blended with a non halogenated flame retardant. The blend was stirred at elevated temperature, while appropriate amount of additives was added to the mixture. The blended mixture was placed in a moving belt and exposed to e-beam(NHV system and KAERI system radiation absorption dose in the range of 80~120 kGy and 30~45 kGy respectively. Finally the resulting irradiated blends were thermally expanded. SEM, DSC, TGA, LOI tester and Cone calorimeter were used for characterization of the resulting foams. |
