Biphasic reaction technique was applied to synthesis ofPoly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide), a commercially important polymer usingCu-dibutylethylenediamine complex catalysts. Identification and characterization studiesinformed that the product showed good match with PPO standard. In biphasic synthesis,the optimal ligand-catalyst ratio was shifted 5:1 to 3:1, if ammonia existed asdeprotonation agent. The carbon chainlength of hydrophobic group in anionic emulsifieralso effected reaction rate, which ascribed to a greater dispersion action and a fastermass transport, both of which facilitated the creation and growth of the polymerchain. The comparison of reaction rate between biphasic andone-phase(homogeneous) reaction indicated that the surface-activity of ligand wasimportant in biphasic synthesis.
