Antifouling paints have been used to prevent attaching of marine organisms which make the ships spend more fuel on plying by increasing weight of ship hulls. As the traditional antifouling paints, self-polishing copolymer(SPC) resins synthesized with tin compounds were used until 2003 years. However these tin-based copolymers caused so many environmental problems that they were forbidden to use as antifouling paints. Therefore, other types of resins have been required in a field of antifouling paints. In this study, we first polymerized polyurethanes(PUs) as the other type of matrix which have carboxylic acid groups by using polyethylene glycol(PEG), 4,4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), and 2,2’-Bis(hydroxyl methyl)-propionic acid(DMPA). And next, we synthesized final resins having quaternary ammonium salts on pendant acid groups of PUs. After synthesis, we tested physical self-polishing properties of resins by the measurement of reduced thickness in sea water. |
