Polypyrrole (PPy) micro/nanostructures were synthesized by organic crystal surface-induced polymerization and emulsion polymerization, using hydrate crystals and micelles, respectively, of anionic surfactant molecules: sodium dodecylsulfonate (C12SO3Na) and sodium decylsulfonate (C10SO3Na). Spherical PPy nanoparticles were obtained by emulsion polymerization above Krafft temperatures (C12SO3Na 35 °C and C10SO3Na 23 °C). However, below their Krafft temperatures flexible PPy nano-blankets with thickness of 20-40 nm and micro-sized PPy hexagonal plates determined by the shapes of the hydrate crystals were produced. The hydrate crystals of the surfactants molecules have been adopted as sacrificial templates for chemical oxidative polymerization of PPy micro/nanostructures by electrostatic interactions between the anionic surfaces of the hydrate crystals and the cationic PPy chains. |
