Morphological and dynamic-mechanical studies were performed to investigate the effects of aliphatic diamines on poly(styrene-4.1-styrenesulfonic acid) PSSSA and poly(styrene-6.9-methacrylic acid) PSMAA copolymer systems. In PSSSA systems, no change in the position, shape and volume of the matrix loss tangent peak was observed, while, drastic decrease in the position of the cluster loss tangent peak was found to be a function of alkyl chain lengths of diamines. The drastic decrease in the width of the ionic-plateau, with negligible change in the ionic-modulus was also found. In PSMAA systems, utmost 10 oC decrease in the position of the matrix loss tangent peak, and significant increase in its volume was observed. Cluster peak was almost disappeared, most probably due to the disruption of the multiplets by diamines. The drastic decrease in the width and the height of the ionic-plateau, and a decrease of at least twelfth orders of the magnitude in the ionic-modulus were also found. It can be concluded that the properties of PSSSA systems were found to be a function of the types of diamines i.e. variation in alkyl chain lengths, while, the types of diamines had little or no effects on PSMAA systems. It can also be concluded that the diamines acted as very sensitive ionic-domain plasticizer in both the systems studied. |
