Effect of surface modified magnesium oxide for improved thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy composite for thermal interface materials (TIMs) |

The effect of functionalization of magnesium oxide (MgO) on the thermal and mechanical properties of MgO filled epoxy composite was studied. The nano magnesium oxide was first prepared by wet precipitation method at room temperature and then functionalized with (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane [APTES] through simple refluxing. The functionalization improves the interfacial bonding between the filler and matrix. Which increases the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite. The thermal conductivity is improved up to ~10 fold in compare to neat epoxy with addition of 30 Wt. % of silane modified magnesium oxide (S-MgO). The mechanical properties showed that the addition of functionalized MgO as fillers in composites enhanced the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and ductility of the composites as compared to neat epoxy. These result indicates that functionalization helps to establish strong interfacial connection and firm interconnected network between the filler and the matrix. |
