Since Pasteur's famous discovery of the macroscopic chirality of tartaric acid in 1848, chiral structure has been one of the most attractive themes in chemistry, physics, and material science. Recently, there reported achiral banana-shaped molecules can form the helical nanofilament structures that can be classified a liquid crystal phase, but still unsolved or hard going problems are inherent in this interesting chiral system because of complex structural characteristics. Control of chiral structures is the first step to understand and use this complex structure just as “Photo 51” in DNA study. Here, we show the nano-confinement of porous media is a good tool to precise control helical nanofilaments and describe the control of both helical pitch and width of HNFs with the confinement in the confined geometries and directly investigated nano-confined HNFs by microscopy and diffraction techniques including SEM, TEM and in-situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) method. |
