Synthesis of graphene oxides and carbon spheres for applications in the removal of water pollutants |

Herein, we report the fabrication of different carbon materials, either bare or ornamented with metallic nanoparticles. Graphene oxide (GO) and carbon spheres (CS) were prepared separately followed by synthesis of graphene- metal nanocomposites and graphene-carbon sphere hybrid aerogel. Graphene-based metal and metal oxide composites were synthesized hydrothermally using NaBH4 as a reducing agent and sodium sorbate as a stabilizer. Graphene-carbon sphere hybrid aerogel decorated with silver nanoparticles was then synthesized by induced reduction and gelation of a mixture of GO and silver doped CS in an oil bath. The synthesized materials have been characterized by various spectroscopic analyses. The inactivation of E. coli, the catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol, and the adsorption of heavy metals and dye were examined. Disinfection, catalytic and adsorption ability of CNMs showed promising efficacy towards a variety of water contaminants. |
