IR transmitting hot pressed (Ba, Mg)-α-Sialon ceramics |

IR transparent Sialon ceramics was fabricated by hot press sintering method. 0.5 wt.% BaCO3 addition shows high transmission of light in Sialon ceramics with better mechanical properties. Addition of BaCO3 in Mg-Sialon system gave higher percentage of equiaxed α-Sialon phase. Thus, the light transmission was 78% was observed in IR region (2500 nm), and had better translucency than previously reported translucent Sialon ceramics. 0.5 wt.% BaCO3 added Sialon ceramics had high hardness of 21.4 GPa and 5.4 MPa.m1/2 fracture toughness. IR transparent Sialon ceramics with high hardness and good fracture toughness can be used in wide applications. |
