Photonic crystals reflect a specific wavelength of the incidence light. The wavelength depends on the particle size, refractive indices of materials, incidence angle of a light, etc. To control the reflection color of the photonic crystals, some researchers have used an electric field or swell/deswell of the medium material. However, stability of photonic crystals under electric field or slow response time of swell/deswell are problems for using display applications. To overcome these problems, we fabricated a ‘photonic membrane’ which is a photonic crystal embedded in thin PDMS film. The photonic membrane attached to a PDMS mold with designed microchannels for expanding the membrane to the outside of the channels by the pressurized gas. Reflective color of the expanded membrane was changed from the original color of the membrane due to the change of incidence angle of the light. With the microchannels, we demonstrated displaying single digit numbers by using a programmed actuation. |
