제목 Improvement of support stability of Pt/C cathode catalyst for PEMFC under start-up/shut-down process.
초록 Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are promising alternative to the current power sources for automotive applications. However, low durability of cathode Pt/C catalyst is a critical obstacle for the commercialization of PEMFCs. A cathode interfacial potential difference could be increased up to 1.5 V in the case of start-up/shut-down process, which leads severe carbon support oxidation of Pt/C catalyst. In this study, novel activated carbon composite support (ACCS) was developed as a support material for Pt/C catalyst. For a single cell MEA test, Pt/ACCS indicated improved activity compared to commercial Pt/C, which has a high surface area carbon black (KB EC-300J) as a support material. Furthermore, Pt/ACCS showed no loss of mass activity and power density under simulated start-up/shut-down accelerated stability test. The good activity and excellent stability of Pt/ACCS catalyst were attributed to the higher degree of graphitization and enhanced hydrophobicity of ACCS.
