Synthesis and characterization of novel bio-based cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer derived from L-carveol |

Epoxy resins are widely used thermosetting materials in various industrial fields such as adhesives, coatings, and composite matrixes. However, most commercialized epoxy resins are prepared from bisphenol A (BPA) which is known as an endocrine disruptor to the detriment of human health. In this research, a novel bio-based cycloaliphatic epoxy was synthesized using L-carveol, monoterpenoid alcohol, obtained from spearmint. The carveol diepoxy monomer (CDE) was prepared by oxidizing L-carveol with dimethyl dioxirane (DMDO). The as-prepared carveol epoxy monomer was cured using branched, polyethyleneimine (BPEI). The hydroxyl group of CDE was additionally crosslinked by hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The chemical structure and curing properties of the product were characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and DSC analysis. As measured by dynamic mechanical analysis, storage modulus and a glass transition temperature of the resulting epoxy network were determined. |
