Nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers are of great interest because of their potential applications in electro-optic technology. In the developments of NLO polymers, stabilization of electrically-induced dipole alignment is one of important criteria at high temperature. Polyimides for NLO applications have attracted attentions because of their high thermal stability. In this work we prepared novel polyimide containing nitrothiazolylazoresorcinoxy group as NLO chromophore. We selected the latter because they have large dipole moment. Furthermore, these groups constitute novel Y-type NLO polyimides, and these Y-type NLO polyimides have not yet been presented in the literature. These Y-type NLO polymers are expected to have both the merits of main-chain and side chain-NLO polymers, namely stabilization of dipole alignment and good solubility. After confirming the structure of the resulting polymers, we investigated their properties. |
