Synthesis and Electrical Properties of Non-fluorinated Diblock Copolymer Composed of Poly(arylene sulfone ether ketone) Block and Poly(sulfonated α-methylstyrene) Block for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell |

There have been many efforts to synthesize new polymer electrolyte membranes which show less dehydration at elevated temperature and maintain high mechanical properties and dimensional stability. One of the approaches is to use hydrocarbon-like aromatic polyether, because the aromatic hydrocarbon has high thermal, mechanical properties and low production cost. Nevertheless, the proton conductivity of membrane based on aromatic polymers is still low as compared to that of aliphatic polymers due to its poorer phase-separation. In this study, we have designed and synthesized novel diblock copolymers comprising of poly(arylene sulfone ether ketone) and poly(sulfonated α-methylstyrene) by the step-growth polymerization and the atom transfer radical polymerization. We synthesized several diblock copolymers with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic chain length ratios and degrees of sulfonation to optimize the phase-separated morphology for giving the highest proton conductivity. |
