Adsorptive Removal of Nerve-Agent Simulant with Zirconium-based Metal-Organic Frameworks |

The isoreticular series of zirconium-based benzenetricarboxlyates were successfully synthesized by incorporating benzenetricarboxylic acid as an organic linker with different length of linear mono-carboxylic acids (formate, propinoate, and valerate) and applied for capturing nerve-agent simulant, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). It was found that adsorption capacity of DMMP was considerably enhanced with increasing number of carbon lengths as incorporating mono-carboxylic acids. The active sorption sites were investigated with in situ FT-IR and various characterization analyses such as XRD, N2 sorption, TGA, SEM, EA and hydrophobic index (HI) measurement. As a result, we found that DMMP capturing highly dependents on the concentration of surface oxygenated species, which can be forming hydrogen bond with P=O of DMMP molecule. It should be noted that this demonstrates the simple modulation of surface environments of Zr-based MOFs can tune removing efficiency of toxic chemicals. |
