Recently, oxide fillers containing glass composites have been used in many applications such as display, chip package, solar cell, and fuel cell. Calcite has low cost, nontoxic, high whiteness, high refractive index and stability over a wide temperature range. Therefore, the calcite is widely used as an optical oxide filler for many industries such as paper, paint, and polymer film. However, the optical properties of calcite-filled glass composites have not been analyzed sufficiently. We fabricated the composites added with the various contents of calcite as a filler in the two kinds of B2O3-ZnO glass systems, which have different refractive index. The reflectance, refractive index, and microstructure of the composites were investigated using UV-visible spectrometer, and scanning electron microscope. The reflectance of the composites increased with the content of the calcite added as a filler in the glass matrix. The refractive indices of the calcite and the glasses are highly related to the reflectance of the composites. It is necessary to understand the effect of the inherent refractive index of the glasses on the reflectance of the composites. The purpose of our study is to design the optimal glass composites with understanding the optical properties of the calcite, glasses and composites consisted of them. |
