Highly Efficient Heat-dissipating Composite Materials using Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Liquid Crystalline Epoxy Crosslinked via Linear Polymerization |

Liquid crystalline epoxy resin (LCER) is the most promising candidate for industrial composite materials with high mechanical strength and thermal conductivity. The origin of the high thermal conductivity of the LCER is the microscale molecular alignment which minimizes phonon scattering through the ordered structure. However, the aligned structure of liquid crystal epoxy is easily disturbed during crosslinking by conventional crosslinkers such as 4,4-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) which forms angled covalent bond between amine and epoxy. In this presentation, we present a novel strategy to crosslink LCER molecules via linear polymerization. A systematic study on the thermal conductivity of LCER and hexagonal boron nitride platelets reveals that the linear polymerization of LCER significantly improves the thermal conductivity of composites over 30% at the same filler contents. |
