For developing organic heat transfer materials (HTM), the mixtures of triphenylene-based reactive discotic mesogens, composed of a vinyl monomer (HTP) and a thiol cross-linker (THB), were newly synthesized. The self-assembled columns of HTM was uniaxially oriented under a rotating magnetic field and stabilized by photopolymerization. As a result, the thermal conductivity of the macroscopically oriented HTM was estimated to be 3W/mK, which is the highest one achieved by organic materials. The excellent thermal conductivity of HTM was attributed to not only the high content of two-dimensional aromatic discogens but also the macroscopically oriented and self-assembled discotic mesogens. The newly developed HTM films can be applied to directional heat dissipating materials in electronic and display devices.
