PE (polyethylene) materials have been increasingly used for gas and water piping systems since the 1960`s. Development of PE materials up to the 3rd generation PE 100 (MRS 10.0 Mpa) HDPE in the 1990's has made it possible to not only replace the existing PE materials, but also penetrate other materials like steel and ductile iron. Improved material properties came with the development of these higher classification PE materials, thereby generating benefits of increased service pressures, improved safety margins and the possibility of producing larger diameter pipes. Samsung General Chemicals has recently developed the first PE 112 (MRS 11.2) HDPE in the world. This PE 112 HDPE offers superior pipe properties such as long-term hydrostatic strength and resistance to slow & rapid crack propagation compared to the existing PE 100 materials. The development of this PE 112 material helps to open a new horizon for PE pipe applications and prompts expansion for market potentials. |
