제목 | Cell Size Control of Open Microcellular Foams Prepared by HIPE Polymerization |
초록 | High internal phase emulsions (HIPE) are emulsions in which the dispersed phase occupies more than the maximum packing fraction for monodisperse spheres. Open microcellular foams prepared by HIPE polymerization show highly porous characteristics with a regular structure. Many researchers have investigated the effects of polymerization conditions on the cell sizes and properties of the foam. In general, compression tests are conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of foam materials. It is well known that the combination of vinyl radical polymerization with dissolved rubber yields a toughened material, possessing unique properties including higher toughness and impact strength. In this study, polybutadiene is introduced to increase the toughness and compression strength of the foam from HIPE polymerization. Experimental results revealed as speculated that compression properties were enhanced as the rubber content increased, and higher recovery ratio after the release of compression was measured. For the morphological aspect of view, scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the microstructural morphology of the foam prepared. It is found that the cell size of the foam decreases as rubber content increases. Acknowledgment: This work was supported by KOSEF through the Applied Rheology Center. |
