Stimuli-responsive polymers have been studied for various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. These polymers show reversible changes of physical and chemical properties correspond to external stimulus such as pH and temperature. Among the techniques that allow the synthesis of well-defined homo and copolymers, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most useful systems, due to its tolerance of impurities, the ready availability of many kinds of initiators, catalysts and monomers, its mild reaction conditions, and its ability to produce polymers with predetermined molecular weights and narrow polydispersities. In this work, new amino acid based monomer, N-acryloyl phenylalanine (APA) was synthesized and characterized. A series of well-defined temperature- or pH-responsive block copolymer, poly(APA-b-NIPAAm) were prepared in high yield under near physiological condition using various water soluble initiators. |
