제목 Composite Alginate Beads for VOC and Heavy Metal(loid) Removal from Water
초록 Contamination of water by heavy metal(loid)s such as arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) is a worldwide problem that affects people, crops and livestock. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as 4-methylphenol (p-cresol) in industrial and agricultural waste water pose environmental and human health concerns. Cost-effective, environmentally benign approaches are needed to mitigate the VOC and heavy metal(loid) problem. We combined alginate (alginic acid) from brown algae with manganese dioxide (MnO2) from battery waste water to produce composite beads for treating contaminated water. Alginate provides a stable support matrix and MnO2 acts as an adsorbent and oxidant. Trace metals in recycled MnO2 increase its effectiveness as an oxidant.
