Novel powder processing for rare-earth free MnBi permanent magnets |

The effect of microstructure and magnetic properties of nanostructural MnBi permanent magnets has been investigated. The rare-earth free permanent magnets MnBi magnets have attracted recent attention for its remarkable maximum energy product and strong magneticcrystalline anisotropy and positive temperature coefficient of coercivity. MnBi magnets have been fabricated by many classical method, so-called top-down processes, i.e. ingot casting or arc-melting to micro-sized crushed powder with long-period preparation processes. In this presentation, a 'Bottom-up' fabrication method for MnBi and its advantages for industrial applications will be discussed. With this bottom-up process, a high content of the low-temperature-phase(LTP) was obtained and an enhanced properties of MnBi were confirmed. The maximum energy product, (BH)max of MnBi synthesized via bottom-up process was about 8.0 MGOe, which is meaningful for permanent magnet applications. A optimization process of MnBi powder bottom-up process will be emphasized. |
