The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of molecular weight of chitosan by ultrasonic treatment. An ultrasonic probe was used to sonicate chitosan in reactor that were immersed in a temperature controlled water bath. Ultrasonic treatment of chitosan solutions were conducted at different ultrasonic energy with a sonicator. Average molecular weight, number average molecular weight and molecular weight dispersion of chitosans were measured by gel permeation chromatography. As a result of this study, degradation of chitosan was rapidly increased during the first stage of ultrasonic treatment, and slowed during the remaining treatment time. Chitosan was degraded slower in concentrated solution. Degradation of chitosan was revealed to be faster in high ultrasonic energy, and diluted solution. |
