Recent advances in controlled polymerization techniques allow the precise control over chains size, uniformity, shape, composition, nano-structure and functionality of macromolecules. Living radical polymerization (LRP) has opened a way to control the architectures and functionality of polymers in free radical processes, which is a critical step for their success in nano-materials, bio-/medical- devices, electronic devices, organic/inorganic nano-hybirds, gels, etc. Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP), Nitroxide Mediated Polymerization (NMP) and Reversible Addition and Fragmentation Transfer (RAFT) are three main techniques for LRP. In this presentation, the LRP techniques will be introduced, followed by their application and catalyst engineering. ATRP hybrid catalyst system to remove metal catalyst residue will be discussed. Preparation of segmented copolymers such as block or graft will be another topic in this presentation. |
