Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic which is used for producing packaging materials and hygiene products. Due to the brittleness of PLA, it has limited in the packaging and structural applications, which require flexibility. Soybean oil is mainly a mixture of triacylglycerides, which are esters of glycerol with saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), prepared by epoxidation of unsaturated bond, is used as plasticizer to improve the stability and flexibility for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds, chlorinated rubber and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) emulsions. In this study, PLA-ESO blend was prepared in internal mixer and the effect of ESO on thermal and mechanical properties of PLA was investigated. It was observed that as ESO content increases, modulus and glass transition temperature were decreased and elongation-at-break was increased. This indicates that ESO act as a plasticizer for PLA. |
