The various dispersants such as low molecular surfactants, polymers and block copolymers were employed to Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes(SWNTs) suspended in various organic solvents. Comparison has been made among the dispersants in term of stability of the composite solutions, dispersion of the SWNTs. SWNTs dispersed with block copolymers have shown the best performance in the dispersants. In particular, a solution of SWNTs dissolved with a poly(styrene)-block-poly(4vinyl pyridine)(PS-b-PVP) in toluene stayed visually non scattering at least more than two months without sedimentation. The similar excellent dispersion of SWNTs was observed when the same PS-b-PVP block copolymer was dissolved with the SWNTs in ethanol. We expect that amphiphilic nature of the block copolymer allows us to disperse SWNTs in both polar and non-polar solvents. We currently try to understand the mechanism of the SWNTs dispersion with the block copolymer by using Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and UV-visible Spectroscopy. |
