Biodegradable polymers are very useful in many biomedical applications; however, inflammation that was induced by an acidic microenvironment after polymer degradation has been pointed out as a major problem. In this work, PLLA was grafted on surface of MgO nanoparticle (PLLA/MgO) via surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization for the effect of pH neutralization and mechanical reinforcement. The chemical structure, morphology, pH-change, thermal, and mechanical properties were analyzed by FT-IR, DSC, TGA, SEM, and UTM, respectively. PLLA/MgO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and their effect on pH neutralization was confirmed. Consequently, the nanocomposites with MgO are effective in improving biocompatibility by pH neutralization as well as enhancing mechanical properties of PLLA matrix. Therefore, this nanocomposite would be potentially used as a various biomedical implants. |
