Effects of Organoclay on the Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Wood/Heavy Metal Free PVC Composites |

Much work has been done on the stabilization of PVC compounds with nontoxic or metal free additives. To improve the performance of a wood/PVC composite a small amount (1~5 phr) of an organoclay was incorporated as nanosize filler into the WPCs in this work. Mechanical properties of the WPCs were investigated using UTM and izod impact tester. The tensile strength of the WPCs with organoclay was considerably higher than that of the WPC without it. To investigate the thermo-physical properties of the WPCs DMA, TMA and TGA were used. SEM images for the fractured-surfaces of the WPCs gave important information on the fracture mechanics of the WPCs by showing somewhat different surface morphology caused by the addition of the organoclay. XRD analysis showed that the polymer matrix with the organoclay had an intercalated structure resulted from the filling of some polymer molecules between the silicate layers of the organoclay. |
