Glucaric acid was selected as a top value added chemical from biomass (sugars) by US Department of Energy. It is an intermediate chemical for plastics, nylons, and food additives. This study shows how glucaric acid can be produced from glucose (monomer of cellulose) via aerobic oxidation on Pt catalyst without using toxic chemical reagents. A Pt catalyst supported on carbon (5 wt.% Pt) showed 74% glucaric acid yield from oxidation of glucose in water. The effects of initial pH, oxygen pressure, reaction temperature, and glucose/Pt ratio on glucaric acid production were also explored. In addition, the Pt/C catalyst was highly stable for the reaction without any sign of metal leaching. |
