Highly salt-rejecting photothermal film made of carbon felt modified with cellulose-PEI membrane toward efficient solar-driven desalination |

Solar-driven steam generation using photothermal films has been considered as a promising energy efficient and low-cost desalination method. Salt crystallization clogging the surface of photothermal films, however, is a main hurdle restricting the long-term operation of solar-driven steam generation. Here we demonstrate an extremely simple and standalone photothermal film consisting of only a carbon felt with cellulose-PEI membrane. We have found the optimal thickness of membrane with high photothermal efficiency and considerable salt-resistant properties. The water evaporation rate was 1.18 kg·h-1·m-2 from saline water containing 3.5 wt.% NaCl under 1 sun irradiation. This simple, easy to make, and up-scalable all-in-one material can act as an efficient photothermal film capable of capturing and converting sunlight into heat. |
