Soft magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particle, with high saturation magnetization and suitable particle size, is popular for being applied as dispersed phase of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid which is a kind of intelligent fluids that are able to perform solid-like properties in the presence of magnetic field. However, hydrodynamic instability of the CI particles in the MR fluid is still an obstacle to a wide application of the MR fluids. In this study, we synthesized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)-coated CI particles. The synthesized CI/PGMA core-shell spheres were characterized by SEM, FT-IR vacuum spectroscopy, and TGA, of which all confirmed that the CI particles were coated well by PGMA. MR fluid based on the synthesized CI/PGMA particles was measured by a rotational rheometer at various magnetic field strength. Its dispersion property based on sedimentation was observed by a Turbiscan, indicating a better settling stability than the pure CI particle-based MR fluid. |
