This study was investigated to test the combustion properties of wood specimens for interior construction, especially focusing on carbon monoxide (CO), which is the leading cause of fire deaths. The quantity of the CO generated was measured by using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The external heat flux was maintained at 35 kW/m2. The average yield of carbon monoxide for Japanese cedar was 0.0983 kg/kg, 1.9 times higher than that of Red pine. The carbon monoxide concentration (ppm) of wood specimens was 111-173 ppm, and Japanese cedar increased 1.6 times compared with Red pine. This was observed to increase by 2.2-3.5 times compared with permissible exposure limits of the occupational safety and health administration (OSHA). Japanese cedar among the woods have been shown the highest CO toxicity. |
