Radioactive iodine is one of the most hazardous elements in radioactive waste. Huge amount of radiodactive iodine is being generated in nuclear power plants and hospitals. These radioactive waste run into our environment and result in extensive contamination and human diseases. Thus development of efficient remediation strategy is urgent. In this study, we developed highly efficient bioremediation technology using Deinococcus radiodurans. Biogenic gold nanoparticles embedded in D. radiodurans showed an excellent removal capacity of radioactive iodine (> 99%) by adsorption process in several aqueous solutions. In addition, since D. radiodurans has a remarkable resistance to ionizing radiation, it has a great potential to be used for on-site remediation in highly radioactive environments. |
