To enhance protective performance of the silica/PEG shear thickening fluid (STF), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) can be used as additional nanofillers. In order to increase the dispersibility of MWNT in STF, silica-coated MWNTs (Si-MWNTs) through covalent bonding were prepared and characterized. Amino group-introduced MWNT with a nitrogen atom content up to 20 wt% was prepared first by reacting acid-treated MWNT and ethylene diamine. Then various amounts of silica were formed on the surface of MWNT initiating from the amino groups by using a sol-gel method. The synthesis was confirmed by FE-SEM, TEM, EA, and FTIR. Then the effects of the pristine MWNT and Si-MWNT addition to silica/PEG suspension on the rheological property were investigated. The shear thickening phenomenon disappeared when the former was added to the silica/PEG suspension. However, it maintained when the latter was added up to 3 wt%. |
