Synthesis and Mucoadhesive Properties of Catechol-Containing Polymers |

We report on the synthesis of the mucoadhesive polymers for covering materials of non-vascular stents. The polymers were designed to have catechol groups, which are the main components of mussel adhesive proteins. The polymers displayed the good adhesion properties in the presence of small amounts of oxidants. The mucoadhesion properties of the polymers were examined using small intestinal submucosa (SIS). The adhesive strength of the catechol-containing polymers was much higher than the currently used fibrin glue. The adhesive polymers exhibited the mucoadhesion strength of 1.2 MPa, as compared with 0.52 MPa of the fibrin glue. The catechol-containing polymers can be used as a coating material for the adhesive non-vascular stents. |
