One of the crucial properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) since delamination between plies is common failure mechanism for CFRPs. In this study, CFRP was fabricated with silica particles between plies to enhance its ILSS. Silica particles were simply poured onto each prepreg before final curing. Addition of silica particles enhanced ILSS and toughness of CFRP up to 20%. Fracture surfaces were carefully examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), indicating different fracture patterns were observed for CFRPs with and without silica particles. As a result, enhancements in ILSS and toughness are attributed to the addition of silica particles. |
