Improvement of mechanical properties of fluorinated short carbon fiber/epoxy composite |

Recently, short carbon fiber (SCF) is used to recycle a disposal of carbon fiber reinforced plastic by removing sizing and cutting and it is feasible to manufacture various shaped composites. In this study, the SCF is modified by fluorination with various partial pressure of fluorine gas as a reinforcement of epoxy composite to enhance mechanical properties. The surface chemical compositions, mechanical properties and fracture surface morphologies are evaluated. Tensile strength and modulus of the fluorinated SCF/epoxy composites enhanced up to 21.1% and 4.8% compared to that of pristine SCF/epoxy composites, respectively. Consequently, enhancement in the mechanical properties of the prepared composites are attributed to the fluorination of SCF, which results in improvements of dispersion and adhesion between reinforcement and matrix. |
